Summer Break has Lost Its Spark (This is How To Get it Back)

Post Summary:

From feeling stuck in routine or overloading our schedules, to forgetting the joy of spontaneous moments and simple pleasures, this post offers relatable reflections and actionable ways to bring the spark back into your summer.

You’ll learn how to:

Whether you’re in high school, college, or well beyond your twenties—this post is your reminder that summer can still be something special, if you let it.

Introduction

Ever wondered why the summer break you’ve been dreaming all about for the last five months of the school year somehow ends up feeling… disappointing? You’re not alone. As we grow older, the magic of summer break starts to fade, and it doesn’t hit quite like it used to when we were younger.

In this post, we’re diving into why that happens—what causes summer to lose its shine—and more importantly, how you can take control and make this summer one of your best yet.

Freedom is Now Routine

The second the clock hits that final minute of your last exam, you jump out of your seat, ecstatic and relieved. You have made it through another terrible or amazing school year, and now—finally—you’re free for the summer.

But then it hits you: you are on break from everything you’ve been working on for months… and now you’re starting from scratch.

No plans. No one to hang out with. Just you, your house, and your family—for the next three months. The excitement wears off fast, and suddenly, freedom feels more like restlessness.

On the flip side, there are those who plan every single minute of their summer break.

Remember when you were younger and summer felt endless? You could play outside, watch TV all day, and not worry about anything. Now, it feels like time is speeding up—and instead of enjoying the break, we’re obsessing over how to make every minute count.

We’re:

  • Working every hour possible
  • Taking summer classes to stay ahead in school
  • Hitting the gym every day to build (or maintain) that “summer body”

The result? We either have no time to actually relax, or we’re totally thrown off by the lack of structure.

Here’s the truth: humans thrive on routines. Having something to look forward to or work toward gives us a reason to get up every day. Without structure, we feel lost. And without setting aside time to recharge during our three-month vacation, we end up more drained than ever before.

The good news? It is possible to have the best of both worlds like Hannah Montana.

What’s Done Only in Summer?

Each season brings its own vibe—but there’s something extra special about summer. Maybe it’s the warm weather, the longer days, or just the freedom from school.

Whatever it is, summer holds a unique place in all our hearts, especially because of the activities we used to love as kids.

So what are the things that make summer truly feel like summer?

Here’s a list of 25+ activities that are best enjoyed under the blazing sun or summer night stars:

  • Have a water fight with family or friends
  • Play some outdoor games / sports (Ex. Corn hole, Manhunt, Badminton…)
  • Eat frozen yogurt or ice cream outside
  • Host or join a barbecue
  • Have a picnic in the park
  • Start a small garden
  • Sunbathe and soak up the rays
  • Try surfing, water tubing, or skiing.
  • Go kayaking on a lake or river
  • Ride your bike through your neighborhood or trails
  • Make s’mores at a bonfire
  • Go outdoor roller skating
  • Explore hiking or walking trails
  • Spend a quiet day fishing
  • Go camping—even if it’s just in your backyard
  • Take a cruise or boat trip
  • Check out a summer festival
  • Visit a local farmers or flea market
  • See an outdoor concert
  • Watch a movie at a drive-in theater
  • Spend the day at an amusement or water park
  • Visit the zoo or an animal farm
  • Hit the beach
  • Lounge by the pool
  • Go to summer camp (or volunteer at one!)

Whether you’ve done all of these or only a few, now’s the time to rediscover the magic in them.

Even these simple activities can become some of the most meaningful moments of your entire summer.

The Ultimate Summer Bucket List

Remember those old summertime movies you used to watch as a kid? Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer instantly comes to mind for me. Judy and her friends were on a mission to make their summer the best ever through their “Mega-Rare Not Bummer Summer Dare” list.

It’s one of the most iconic, chaotic, and hilarious summer movies—if you haven’t seen it already, definitely give it a watch (although you might experience a ton of second hand embarrassment). It might even awaken your inner child (not sponsored, just facts).

You can watch it for free on Tubi after reading the rest of this journal entry ofc.

Now, channel some of that Judy Moody energy and create your own list of summer dares or must-do’s. Use some of the activities mentioned earlier—or add your own—and set a deadline to complete them before summer ends.

Get your closest friends involved, find an online group of strangers to join in, or turn it into a full-on family affair.

Whatever it takes, make this summer one you’ll never forget.

Making Summer Spontaneous Again

School and work often train us to stay busy—to schedule every minute, stay productive, and keep moving. But what if you gave yourself permission to not plan everything? There’s real joy (and way less pressure) in being spontaneous.

Try leaving a space in your daily schedule just for you—a time to explore, wander, or simply breathe.

Take a walk somewhere new. Revisit a spot you love. Reach out to an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. These small, unplanned moments can end up becoming the most meaningful.

And if you’re thinking, “This doesn’t apply to me—I can’t drive or own a car,” don’t worry. You were born with legs—use them!

Take a walk down your street, through your neighborhood, or even just around your backyard.

If you live in a city, there are tons of ways to get around. Hop on a bus, train, or even an Uber. Go off to somewhere random and explore.

Not in the mood to go out? No problem. Try doing a face mask, start a DIY arts and crafts project, work on a puzzle, or journal your thoughts.

Whatever sparks your interest, give yourself permission to follow it—no pressure, no checklist. Just something fun during your own designated “recess” from the hustle.

Use This Time Wisely

Summer doesn’t have to mean working 24/7 with no breaks—or packing your schedule with back-to-back hangouts. It’s really about finding the balance between leisure, productivity, and fun.

Whether it’s trying a new hobby, going on an unplanned adventure, or simply taking a moment to breathe, I hope you take up at least one of these ideas before the season ends.

Make the rest of your summer feel like it did when you were younger—fun, effortless, and exciting.

Until next time, my fellow anomalies. Stay Anomalous. Signing off…

It’s crazy how easy it is to either overpack your summer or let it slip away without doing anything memorable. I love the reminder that the magic of summer isn’t gone it just needs a little intentional effort (and maybe a water balloon fight 😅).
