Introduction
It’s officially spooky fall season, and that calls for a new costume and cozy crochet projects!
Growing up, my family never really celebrated or decorated for fall or Halloween, but I’d still join friends for spooky events—usually wearing the same costume every year until I grew out of it.
Over the past few years, I’ve started making my own costumes using clothing already in my closet, then purchasing (or creating) the accessories needed to bring the costume to life.
In this post, I’ll be sharing why homemade Halloween costumes are better, how to find costume inspiration, and a list of free, beginner-friendly crochet costume patterns.
3 Reasons Why You Should DIY
- It’s budget-friendly. Costumes from stores can cost an arm and a leg, but reusing what you already own saves money.
- It’s more sustainable. Why buy a new costume every year just to wear it once?
- It’s unique. A handmade costume is less likely to be duplicated, making your look stand out at any party or while trick-or-treating.
Last year I made two costumes: one as Hello Kitty and the other as Neapolitan Ice Cream!

I crocheted Hello Kitty ears and made an ice cream cone out of construction paper.
Bonus
Creating your own costume can also be a fun activity to do with friends, in addition to pumpkin carving and haunted house trips!
Costume Inspiration
You might think making your own costume means it has to be boring or basic, like a last-minute black cat, but that’s not true. Even simple ideas can look way better (and cost way less) than their store-bought versions.
Some of the best costumes I’ve seen on social media were unique, creative, funny and not mass-produced.
For example:

- Cosplay: Although usually involving very detailed and expensive costumes cosplayers create also very impressive handmade costumes through DIY crafts that are budget friendly. One of the most impressive I’ve ever seen was from Scarlet Stitch Studios!
If you’re looking for inspiration, besides blogs like this one, Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are great platforms to see how others bring their creative costume ideas to life.

Conclusion
Part of the fun of Halloween is planning your costume—so why not stretch that fun even further by making it yourself?
Everyone deserves a unique costume that fits them perfectly without spending $50+ at Spirit Halloween or Party City for something they’ll only wear once.
Whether you crochet, knit, sew, or even make a costume from an Amazon Prime box, I hope you take the chance to create something of your own. Who knows—you might end up with the best costume of all!
